What’s in This Fall, According to the Front Row of NYFW
Fall is officially here, and New York fashion week is giving us plenty of inspiration for this season's lookbook. The guests at shows like Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors and Khaite, are all wearing the same things: dark neutrals, bold prints, structured jackets, and statement accessories/colors. This fall is about mixing rustic and eclectic accessories with familiar pieces. From dark leather and houndstooth to chunky jewelry and pops of red, NYFW guests are mixing classic staples with statement-making details. Here’s what the front row of NYFW is telling us to wear this fall.
Red is a statement piece
Fall is known for neutrals and red has found its way into the mix but not like you may think. Instead of centering the entire outfit around bright colors, guests are incorporating bright red through specific pieces and accessories, like the perfect after thought. Red handbags, scarves, shoes, and chunky necklaces add contrast to the dark neutrals of the clothing. It creates a fun statement without the physical accessory being eccentric.
Neutrals are dark and warm
Black, brown, beige, and white all dominated the seats of fashion shows last week. From head to toe people dressed in dark neutrals creating a formal and sophisticated feeling. Although, the looks all felt like they could be dressed down because of their warm and inviting undertones. Neutral colors are letting people experiment with texture and silhouettes.
Leather is getting a revamp
Leather will always be a fall staple, but NYFW guests are giving it new life. Rather than perfectly polished leather, people have been wearing jackets with rustic notions and finishes. Suede fringe has also slowly started to trend, and is now ready for a full take over. Rough silver hardware is appearing on jackets while being paired with matching leather pants or a neutral skirt. Leather jackets are also appearing to have distinct silhouettes. They are structured and tailored to the individual.
Patterns are here to stay
Patterns have been making their way into the fashion cycle for awhile. But this season, houndstooth, animal print, and plaid have been appearing everywhere. These patterns don’t have to be the entire outfit; they are being styled as if they were a neutral skirt or being added onto a statement bag. No one is committing to a head to print but rather using patterns as an unexpected detail.
Accessories are the outfit
This fall, accessories are becoming the most talked about part of an outfit. NYFW attendees paired classic clothing with bold accessories. The accessories were a combination of other noticeable trends. Most hardware on shoes, bags, or belts, was silver. Chunky metals were paired on top of classic browns. Animal print bags, mostly zebra, stood out against the warm neutrals of the outfit. Or a red flat caught your attention.
At Auburn, these trends can be easily used in the college look book. For a night game, pair a brown leather jacket with a simple top and patterned skirt. And for a date night, wear a long dress with a bright colored statement necklace and matching statement flat. This season you don’t need an entirely new wardrobe to dress like you're at NYFW.
