The Reality of New York Fashion Industry
Everyone can agree that New York City is the epicenter of fashion dreams. For many, including me, the city is beyond exciting and it has been my dream to live here ever since I was little.
However, one thing is clear: it’s not always as glamorous as one may think. Sure there are incredible showrooms, glamorous clothes, and celebrity sightings, but there are also plenty of bumps in the road. Blisters from walking in heels all day, iced coffees that cost near my Auburn rent, and sticky subway rides with garment bags fill my days.
Here are just a few things I’ve learned from my internship so far in the best city in the world…
1. The learning curve Is real
Although I have learned a great deal as a fashion merchandising student at Auburn, there were still many things I didn’t know before starting my internship. Coming into my wholesale position I have had some experience in showrooms, but I had no idea what went on behind the scenes. From merchandising in flagship stores to dressing models during buying appointments, there were tons of things that I had to learn.
As much as Auburn prepares you for jobs in the industry, there is nothing like real-world experiences that allow you to learn exactly what you would be doing day to day.
2. Networking is everything
Everyone has heard it before; it’s not what you know, but who you know.
Interning in New York puts you in the same rooms as people that you would never imagine. Being a wholesale intern, I’ve met with buyers from some of the largest retailers in the world who have given me advice that I will never forget.
I’ve also been able to meet models and photographers that I had once read of in Vogue or Vanity Fair. Meeting these people and being a part of their day-to-day lives has been incredible and has taught me that no matter what room you’re in, always be on your A game.
3. You will discover what you want
Although I’ve always known I wanted to go into wholesale, there are so many avenues that I didn’t even think of. Working with stylists, buyers, marketing teams, and design teams, I didn’t realize how much goes into brand creation. There are so many different roles and so many different paths in this industry. Being in the intern role provides clarity on passions, work ethic, and what kind of future you want.
Interning in New York has been chaotic, dynamic, and unforgettable. Even though I’ve only been here for a month, I can’t imagine ever leaving. I have learned so much from so many incredible professionals, and I am so grateful for this opportunity.
The garment bags, coffee runs, and blisters fade away when you’re doing what you love every single day!
