Is Renting the New Buying?

Is Renting the New Buying?

Walk into any college apartment mailroom right now and you might think Nuuly or Rent the Runway have taken over the world. Bags are everywhere. Scroll through Instagram and suddenly another “rentals” account has followed you, offering dresses for formals, date parties, game days, and basically any event where repeating an outfit quite literally feels illegal.

So, is renting the new buying?

For young shoppers, it’s starting to look that way.

Think about renting clothes like renting a house or an apartment. You get to decorate it, enjoy it, make it yours for a little while, and then eventually give it back. Except instead of losing your security deposit over a discrete hole in the wall, you’re returning a dress after one weekend, praying it doesn’t have any stains on it.

The appeal seems pretty simple right?

Instead of spending hundreds on a dress you will only wear once, you can rent it for less. You’re able to wear it to your event, get the pictures, and send it right back. Then, when the next event comes rolling around, you get something completely different.

For college students, this makes a lot of sense. Between formals, socials, date parties, weddings, recruitment, game days, and everything else that somehow requires a new outfit, buying something every time gets overly expensive. Renting gives shoppers the ability to constantly rotate their wardrobes without adding to them and overcrowding the closet.

Your Closet Could Have a Side Hustle

Rental companies aren’t the only ones benefiting from this uprising trend. Individuals are renting and basically have created their own mini economy on college campuses. Remember the rental Instagram accounts? Kind of genius right? Dresses lined up against someone’s apartment wall with the size, rental price, and available dates in the caption. What used to be “Can I borrow your dress?” has turned into “Venmo me $45.”

Instead of letting a $200 dress collect dust after a singular event, the owner can rent it out multiple times and potentially earn back some of what she paid. The renter gets the look without the triple digit price tag, and Instagram makes the entire transaction insanely easy. Honestly, it shows a larger shift in fashion. Having access to something can sometimes be more valuable than actually owning it.

When Renting Wins

For weddings, formals, date parties, vacations, and other one-time events, renting makes the most sense. It also makes designer fashion more accessible. Maybe you have the fattest crush on a $500 dress. You just don’t have a crush on it being $500.

Renting lets you wear the statement piece without breaking the bank. With social media constantly introducing us to new trends, brands, and outfits, having endless options at your fingertips is pretty appealing.

But I Still Want My Clothes

Here’s my problem: I’m not much of a renter myself.

I understand the appeal, but I like owning my clothes. If I spend money on something, I like knowing it’s mine to wear five different ways, lend it to a friend, or rediscover it two years later and convince myself it’s brand new.

Some pieces also deserve a permanent place in your closet: the perfect denim jacket, everyday basics, jeans that fit just right, or a dress you know you’ll wear again. Over time, your closet becomes less about what’s trending and more about what feels like you.

So… Rent or Buy?

Maybe we don’t have to choose. The future of fashion could be the hybrid closet. Rent the statement dress. Buy the perfect jeans. Borrow the micro-trend you’ll hate in six months. Invest in the pieces you’ll love six years from now.

Renting isn’t replacing buying, but it is certainly changing how we think about getting dressed. Maybe the new luxury isn’t having the biggest closet, it’s having endless options without needing another hanger.
