Creating a Closet to Last

Creating a Closet to Last

With fast fashion as the new frontier and new trends appearing every day why would you want a closet to last? While it’s fun and exciting to fill your closet with a new wardrobe every few weeks, having a few staple pieces of good quality not only will help your wallet but also the environment. To have a closet built of long lasting pieces that you enjoy, want to wear often, and resist wear is to genuinely understand your style.

It all boils down to the familiar concept of quality over quantity. Instead of buying inexpensive items that fall apart in a matter of weeks, put your money towards well made, durable materials. Although it costs more upfront it’s a matter of the long game. Your clothing holds up and does not need to be replaced quickly.

The biggest phenomenon that pushes fast fashion is micro trends. You need to develop a style because while trends come and go and style is timeless. These timeless pieces need to fit well and remain comfortable. Due to their versatility they should even be able to be paired with an item or two on trend.

Only buy what you yourself would wear. Find clothes that fit your lifestyle. Many outfits or styles look appealing in stores, worn by models, or on social media but end up sitting in the back of your closet once purchased. Clothing that will last is all about being able to wear it in day to day life and feel comfortable and confident in yourself and your style.

But even high quality clothing needs to be taken care of. If you follow the labels on clothes about the care of the material and structure when washing can extend their lifespan greatly. Also partaking in simple repairs to buttons or loose threads can keep items in working condition for many years to come.

Color palettes are huge. You want your clothes to match. Not only in very specific outfits but in many different combinations. While most people shy away from it, neutrals instead of bright colors creates an easier to style palette. Browns, grays, black, and navy are colors that are easy to pair with a multitude of colors. This gives you the ability to add accent patterns  and pops of color of your choosing.

All of this comes about through self control. Resist impulse purchases! Before buying, think if it can be worn with things you already wear and love. Taking time when you shop can prevent unnecessary clutter and it means that you’d actually wear every piece in your closet.

When you build a closet made to last it isn’t about having fewer clothes it’s instead valuing better clothes. When you focus on care and computability before purchasing it can cut down on waste and unnecessary spending. You can find your personal style through pieces that you’ll love for a while. Get a wardrobe that is an investment for yourself and a future where life looks a little more sustainable.
