Trends in Milan: Exploring Individuality
After studying in one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan, Italy, for over a month, I’ve caught onto many trends that differ from those in America. Overall, they have a more exploratory, creative, and daily fashion lifestyle. Their street style is less about rigid rules and more about expressive experimentation.
It’s not unusual to see someone walk into a café in a head-to-toe lace outfit paired with combat boots before 10 a.m.
Here are some of the style elements that have influenced me the most:
Corporate Chic
Milan has redefined office wear. Think blazers with exaggerated shoulders, oversized button-ups tucked into sharply tailored trousers, and pencil skirts paired with sneakers or dainty ballet flats. It’s power dressing, but with an effortless, fashion-forward edge.
What really stood out was how people layered pieces; structured jackets over lace camisoles, or a vest worn solo as a top.
It’s corporate, but creative.
Studs and Edge
Studs aren’t just for punk rock anymore; they’re being used in sophisticated ways. From studded bags to shoes, Milan fashion icons are leaning into metallic accents to add edge to their looks.
The key? Balance.
Think a feminine dress with a studded belt or a simple white tee under a studded leather jacket.
Polka Dots Are Back
Classic, playful, and surprisingly versatile, polka dots are making a serious comeback.
In Milan, I’ve spotted them on flowing midi dresses, sheer tops, and even tights. Designers and locals alike are using them in unconventional ways.
I can’t say that I’m upset about this pattern’s comeback.
Chunky Accessories
Minimalism is not the Milanese approach when it comes to accessories.
Oversized sunglasses, chunky resin bangles, giant statement earrings, and bags that could double as pillows; bigger is definitely better. It’s not just about maximalism, it’s about using accessories to take your outfit to the next level. Even a plain white T-shirt and jeans combo gets an instant upgrade with a mega-chain necklace and a wrist full of bangles.
Lace, Lace, Lace
Delicate, romantic, and darling, lace is everywhere, but it’s not reserved for lingerie or bridal. Think sheer lace pants layered over bike shorts, high-neck lace tops with oversized trousers, or longline lace cardigans.
It’s about mixing softness with bold silhouettes and making lace part of everyday streetwear rather than saving it for special occasions.
Ballet Flats
Yes, ballet flats are back. Yet, they’re not just the usual, round-toe ones you might remember. In Milan, they come with square toes, ribbons wrapping around the ankle, metallic finishes, or tiny heel details. Paired with wide-leg jeans, slip dresses, or even suits, they’re the go-to shoe for comfort without compromising on style.
The easiest shoe to slip on, yet the most stylish one in your closet.
All in all, what I’ve noticed most is that fashion in Milan isn’t reserved for “going out” or special events. It’s a daily expression. People dress with intentionality, even if it’s to run errands or grab coffee. There’s a commitment to quality, detail, and individuality.
As I take inspiration from this vibrant city, I find myself rethinking how I build my outfits. Could I add a little lace under a t-shirt? Would a pair of embellished ballet flats work with my go-to jeans? Milan has challenged me to be more bold, more playful, and more present with my personal style.
