Trend Revival: The Flip-Flop
Growing up, shopping for summer would not have been complete without a family trip to Old Navy where I’d pick out a pair of five dollar flip-flops to last me the summer season. I would wear these flip-flops religiously — to every outing, dinner, pool day, any place you could imagine. These colorful, rubber shoes were essential to my summer wardrobe.
Around ten years ago, I slowly stopped reaching for my flip-flops. The flip-flop became replaced with Birkenstock sandals, slides, and sneakers. I went years without owning a single pair, and nearly forgot how vital they had once been to my wardrobe.
That was until this year, 2025, when I noticed a resurgence of this shoe.
Flip-flops have crept their way back in style, and are a top trending shoe for this summer. They are being produced at all different price points, and we are seeing them from brands such as H&M, Havaianas, Staud, and everything in between.
However, they didn’t just make a comeback as a poolside shoe, they are being worn in high fashion settings, on runways and a part of celebrity styled looks. Gigi Hadid has even collaborated with Havaianas, whose flip-flops are said to have an effortless appeal. Seeing her, alongside other celebrities, such as Dakota Johnson, sporting flip-flops on the street, confirms that this trend is about to boom.
Flip-flops have made a comeback as a chic shoe. Although there was a brief period of time where they were deemed “unfashionable”, they have made a strong reappearance. I personally love this trend resurgence because we are seeing so many different styles of flip-flops, such as square-toed, wedged, and studded. While we also can see them worn in a multitude of settings.
They are no longer confined to being beach shoes that you don’t mind getting sandy and wet, they are being worn with “dressed up” looks, such as cocktail dresses.
I think that flip-flops are adding a relaxed feel to the outfits of this summer, and I am here for it.
All in all, I love what a flip-flop can add to an outfit. They can add an effortlessly chic, low-maintance, yet put together feel to any look. They are also a nostalgic shoe for me, bringing me back to a time when I would shamelessly wear them everywhere and anywhere. Now that they have made their way back, I hope that they are here to stay. I am excited to see brands continue to develop unique styles and variations of flip-flops, and to witness all the ways that people will style them.
